DCU student on 4,000km ‘cycle for humanity'

Oisin Prendiville, who graduates this summer from DCU's BSc. in Multimedia degree, has undertaken a four thousand kilometre cycle around the coastline of Ireland in an effort to gather funding and awareness of Habitat for Humanity. The organisation is an international self-build housing charity, founded in 1976. It works together with homeowners and volunteers, globally, to construct the houses using donations of money, materials and professional expertise and had its first Irish project of four homes in Ballymun.

Oisin is one of four DCU students who will travel to Chile in September to build houses with the organisation, among a group of fifteen Irish volunteers. To raise vital funding for the endeavour, Oisin planned his epic cycle around the entire coastline, hoping to raise at least one euro for each of the 3,776 kilometres covered.

The solo cycle began on June 28 th , in Killorgan, Co. Kerry, and has been widely supported along the way, with many joining him for parts of the journey up the western coastline. Oisin is certainly not daunted by the odyssey, saying "I'm very excited about what lies ahead as I explore this country that has formed the basis for much of my identity and experiences but which I've seen relatively little of."

Oisin's cycle will take him through Dublin city on Monday, August 8 th , when he will be greeted by the Deputy Lord Mayor and others as he continues toward Kerry to complete the trek.
