03 February 2011

This year's President's Research Awards were presented to Professor Patrick Flood of the Dublin City University Business School and to Professor Paul Whelan of the School of Electronic Engineering and the Centre for Image Processing and Analysis within the Rince Institute. The awards are presented annually to researchers who have excelled in their field.
Speaking at today’s ceremony, DCU President, Professor Brian MacCraith said, “While today is primarily about celebrating the excellence of our 2 awardees I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your excellent commitment in challenging times. Our reputation as a research-intensive university is due to your excellence. It is you that have enabled DCU to punch above its weight. And this has never been more important to Irish society, especially at a time when the core missions of universities will come under serious scrutiny”.
He went on to add that DCU is a university that values research, but not simply research for the sake of research; “Our work does not end with the discovery of new knowledge – we go further and place a large emphasis on knowledge transfer – the Translation of research into societal and economic value”.
Professor Flood received the award in the Humanities and Social Sciences for his outstanding contribution to the development of scholarship in the areas of human resource management and organisational behaviour here in Ireland and internationally.
