DCUs `Murder, She Wrote' Society wins Best New Society award at BICS ceremony
Wednesday 20 April 2005
DCU was host to the Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) National Society Awards 2005 on Thursday 14 April. The awards honour the outstanding contribution made by societies and individuals to campus life and are a celebration of the passion and enthusiasm that is integral to extra-curricular participation. Over 250 students and staff from third-level institutes all over Ireland attended, representing a broad range of societies.
Guest of honour at the awards was Senator Mary O'Rourke, Leader of the Seanad, who paid tribute in her speech to importance of societies in personal development for students, as well as to DCU for its pioneering accreditation system - the Uaneen module.
The awards ceremony was organised by a hosting committee, led by DCU students Donal Mulligan and Riona Judge McCormack, and was a vibrant, colourful and emotional event, particularly for those whose efforts were recognised by a national award.
DCU's 'Murder, She Wrote' Society took "Best New Society" on home turf. A spokesperson for the society said, "Society life has always been about taking part. It's also about a sense of belonging and a sense of community. We are delighted to have been awarded 'Best New' from amongst the fantastic societies in our category. It's a wonderful reminder that society life in DCU is still new, interesting and fun".
