Silver Science Success
Thursday 26 May 2005

On Friday 20 May 2005, Irish science students, trained by the DCU science Olympiad mentors, won silver medals at the 3rd European Science Olympiad (EUSO) in Galway. The EUSO is a team competition for EU second level science students. The winning team members were Martina Feyzrakmanova, Aisling Rooney and Aoibheann Brady.
The two teams were selected and trained by the DCU Mentors, Ms Janice Cunningham (School of Biotechnology), Dr Odilla Finlayson (School of Chemical Sciences & Team Leader) and Dr Eilish McLoughlin (School of Physical Sciences).

Ten EU countries participated in the competition. The science faculty staff of NUI Galway and GMIT designed the various tasks set for the competition which were co-ordinated and managed by the chairman of the scientific committee, Dr. Paraic James (School of Chemical Sicences). Michael A. Cotter (DCU) was the EUSO 2005 Director. Both were members of the management committees of EUSO 2005 and Europe-Week.
EUSO 2005 was part of a larger Europe-Week held in Galway from the 14 - 21 May. As well as two days of science experiments the delegations were presented with a weeklong educational, cultural and social programme.
EUSO 2005 was successfully undertaken and completed by the science faculties of the three institutions, NUI Galway, GMIT and DCU working closely together over the past year.
