Students set up first 'Raising and Giving' (RAG) society

Raising and Giving

DCU's students have established Ireland's first 'Raising And Giving' (RAG) society. The society organises charitable fundraising and awareness campaigns and offers volunteering opportunities to students.

The founders of the society, Ronan O Dalaigh and David Butler, both studying Business and Irish, are in the process of launching a national RAG organisation and hope that the idea will be adopted by other Irish universities and colleges.

DCU RAG co-chair, David Butler, said, "We believe students have the passion and drive to help make out country a better place and we are hopeful that DCU RAG can provide the platform with which to do this."

DCU RAG is one of DCU's largest societies, with a membership of over 500 students and a large following on Facebook and Twitter.

Events to date
include an 'Underwear Mile', held on the 28 October, when over 150 DCU students ran a lap of the campus in their underwear. The event raised over EUR3000 and all the proceeds went to the Sean Lyne Cancer Fund. The society has also paired students with their five flagship charities for the year: Make A Wish, Radio Ri Ra, Focus Ireland, DCU Educational trust and The Aisling Project.

Currently the society are organising a White Collar Boxing fundraising event, to be held on December 8 in the Venue. At the end of the year the profits raised by the society will be presented to their flagship charities.
