NUI Galway Indoor Cricket Intervarsities 2007

DCU won the Indoor Cricket Intervarsity Tournament which was held in the grounds of NUI Galway. This is an amazing achievement considering the club was founded in 2005.

DCU’s opening game of the tournament was against Athlone IT. DCU batted first and scored a competitive 86 all out, mainly thanks to Irish Under 17 international Theo Lawson scoring 56. A good bowling performance restricted Athlone to 36 all out, the highlight with Karan Sehgal taking a hat trick. Next game was against Trinity, another very good bowling performance restricted the favourites for the tournament to 43.

In the game against the host university, NUI Galway, DCU consolidated and posted a very competitive score of 83. NUI Galway started well but then, down to great fielding and excellent bowling, NUI collapsed and DCU won convincingly.

The final, which again was against the hosts NUI Galway, despite losing 2 early wickets Theo Lawson and Varun Raina held the innings together with Lawson scoring an excellent 36. DCU scored 83. NUI Galway kept losing vital wickets but always looked on course to reach their target. So the tournament came down to the last 2 overs. NUI Galway needed 13 runs to win with two wickets left. Varun Raina bowled this over, with NUI getting their target down to 9 runs, Raina first removed the batsman LBW and then picked up his 2nd and the vital wicket of the over with Lawson taking a superb diving catch.
