Tuesday 22 May 2007

Three graduates and a current student of the School of Communications were award-winners in the GSK Medical Media Awards presented last week. These awards recognise the work of journalists covering health in the print, broadcast and electronic media. Sylvia Thompson (MA Journalism) won the consumer print journalism award, Gary Finnegan (MSc Science Communication) won the electronic media award, Frank Shouldice (BA Communication Studies) received the television award on behalf of the production team for Three 60, a series about disability, and Lloyd Mudiwa (student on the MA in Political Communication) won the professional medical journalism award.

Irish Times journalist Sylvia Thompson received her award for contributions on mental health to the health supplement of The Irish Times. Gary Finnegan, editor of Irish Medical News, won his award for a series of articles on fortifying food with folic acid which appeared on the newspaper's website, as well as in the print edition of Irish Medical News. The judges commended his articles as "well-researched, informative and highly accessible". Lloyd Mudiwa, a reporter with Medicine Weekly, was cited for "the quality of his writing and his open mind, and for his emphasis on issues outside Ireland".
