Shannon Quinn receives Sports Personality award from Bernard Dunne

Shannon Quinn, captain of the Ladies GAA team, has won the coveted Sports Personality of the Year 2011 award.   The annual awards ceremony was held in the Crowne Plaza and was attended by 170 students and staff.

The special guest for the night was Bernard Dunne, former World Boxing Champion.

The judges were Yvonne O'Connor, Una Redmond, Siobhan Byrns, Bernard Jackman, Enda Fitzpatrick, Michael Kennedy and Jim Dowling, who all agreed that Shannon had been a great ambassador for 'all that is good' within DCU Sport during her 3 years at DCU.

They went on to say, "She is an academic high flier, having attained the highest standards in all examinations so far.  Shannon has managed to combine a very demanding academic programme with the concurrent demands of being a very successful sports star.  Her academic prowess is well recognised, so much so that both Ernst and Young and KPMG have offered her a 3-year postgraduate programme of employment and further studies on her graduation. A key member of the DCU Intervarsity three-in-a-row winning team, captaining the team in 2009-10, Shannon has played inter-county football at both minor and senior level since 2007, winning provincial titles also three years in a row.  She played a key role in her county team in last year’s All Ireland final and she is recognised within her club as being an outstanding coach.  She is also a key member of a fundraising group for the Fr Peter McVerry Trust which was set up here in DCU as part of the GAA club’s initiative to help the less well off".
