Dublin City University announced the appointment of Professor Steven Knowlton as professor of journalism in the School of Communications. Prof Knowlton will take up his new position in 2007, filling a vacancy left by the retirement of Prof John Horgan.

Prof Knowlton has been a journalism educator for 20 years, lecturing in Penn State University and in Hofstra University, New York, where he is a full professor. He has published books on journalism education, journalist ethics and on the 19th century Irish nationalist organ, The Nation.

Prof Knowlton worked for nearly 20 years as a journalist in US newspapers and news agencies. He undertook his doctoral research at Washington University on the Irish nationalist leader, Charles Gavan Duffy.

Prof Knowlton is currently completing a six-month Knight International Journalism Fellowship in Chisinau, Moldova, together with his wife Karen Freeman, a New York Times science journalist. Prof Knowlton and Ms Freeman have helped establish the first independent journalism college in Moldova.

“DCU offers probably the best graduate journalism education in English-speaking Europe and, with its commitment to have a global reach, can make a major contribution to the development of journalism internationally,” Prof Knowlton said. “The university is still quite new and has the freedom to take advantage of 21st century developments, and to help shape them.”
