The Hon Ms Justice Mella Carroll
Tuesday 17 January 2006

It is with great sadness that the DCU community learned of the recent passing away of the university's Chancellor, Ms Justice Mella Carroll, after a long illness which she bore with great courage and good humour.
She took up her appointment as DCU's Chancellor in 2001. She carried out the role with great energy and enthusiasm, and worked closely with the Governing Authority (which she chaired) and with the President and the whole university community.
The university was very proud to be associated with her in this way. She had been the first female judge to be appointed to the High Court in 1980. She also chaired the Commission on the Status of Women and the Commission on Nursing. Both of these had a major impact on Irish life.
The President of DCU, Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, paid tribute to Ms Justice Mella Carroll’s contribution to the university over the past five years: “Mella Carroll has been an outstanding Chancellor, and helped steer the university through a time of considerable change and strategic development. We were privileged to have her as our Chancellor and appreciated particularly her personal qualities which made her such a pleasure to work with. On behalf of the university, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to her family and friends”.
