Since 2005 the DCU Access Service and the Visiting Teacher Service for Travellers have run an educational scholarship programme for Traveller students entering the senior cycle of secondary school. The programme aims to recognise Traveller students who are performing to the best of their ability in school and who show a positive attitude to their studies. Since the programme began 22 students have received awards and on April 1st seven students were presented with awards to mark their achievements.

Access has also been running another initiative involving Travellers and education. A series of ‘Traveller Parent Development Days’ were established. The aim of the project was to provide a forum for Traveller parents to meet and discuss concerns around post primary education for their children. Over the last number of years Access have engaged with parents and students and have gathered feedback.
