DCU Celebrates Teaching and Learning

Innovation and excellence in teaching and learning at DCU were celebrated at this year’s annual Teaching and Learning Day and President’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching which took place on 3rd June. The event celebrated the outstanding work of a total of 51 nominees across three categories as well as the innovative teaching and learning projects of colleagues across the university through their poster presentations.

The event began with an address from the President, Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski followed by the awards ceremony. Nominations, which were made by students, staff and alumni, were read out for the three awards categories; Academic category, New Lecturers/Tutors category and Academic Support category.

Recipients of this year’s awards were Dr. Paul van Kampen from the School of Physical Sciences for the Academic category, Michael Breen from the School of Law and Government and Dr. Brian Harney from DCUBS who were joint winners of the New Lecturers/Tutors category and Colette Lyng from the School of Nursing for the Academic Support category.

A keynote address entitled In Search of Excellence was also delivered by Professor Richard O’Kennedy, Vice President for Learning Innovation. Professor O’Kennedy highlighted the quality of the work staff at DCU do and referred to the positive findings emerging from the recent institutional quality review undertaken by the Irish Universities Quality Board. He also highlighted many areas in which we can further develop teaching and learning across the university.
