Mason Hayes+Curran - Green Business Plan Award
19 April 2011

The finals of this year's Mason Hayes and Curran Green Business Plan competition took place on Friday, 15 April at DCU. The initiative was intended to give students a platform from which to present their green business proposals to professionals from the world of business and investment.
Over 35 teams and individuals submitted entries, all of which were expected to focus on the environmentally-friendly aspect of their business idea.
This year winner is David Carey, a second year student on the BSc Sport Science and Health programme. He devised a business plan for sports nutrition and healthy lifestyle product, which would be one hundred percent Irish manufactured to the highest standard possible and contain no cheap sugars or filler ingredients. Additionally, packaging and labelling would be recyclable.
This year's judges were Gavin O'Flaherty, Partner, Mason Hayes+Curran, Mike Hayes, Senior Partner-KPMG and Richard Stokes, CEO-DCU INVENT. Speaking at the award ceremony, the judges commented that David's business plan and presentation were highly professional; David had thought through his idea very carefully and had developed strategies to mitigate major risks. Additionally, his knowledge on the science of nutrition was impressive. He had taken a number of important proactive steps towards the implementation of his idea by engaging with Irish manufacturers and bringing on board resourceful advisors.
