DCU Students’ Union publication, CAMPUS, walked away with the award for ‘Magazine of the Year’ at last nights national Smedia (Student Media) Awards, sponsored by the ‘3’ mobile network. CAMPUS beat off competition from other third-level institutions across the country and this achievement is made all the more impressive by the fact that the magazine is only in its first year.

Charlene Connolly, President of the Students’ Union, is thrilled with the achievement. “We completely overhauled the magazine this year when we changed it from An Tarbh to CAMPUS, promising ‘No More Bull’ from the Students’ Union. We are so proud of the result and more importantly, the fact that it has been recognised on a national level,” says Ms. Connolly.

“This accomplishment would never have been realised however were it not for the creative genius that is Mikey Robinson (Vice-President of the Students’ Union) and a strong and responsible team of both past and present School of Communication students.”

CAMPUS was originally edited by Leonie Corcoran, a recent journalism graduate of DCU, who is now working for the Irish Times. The current team of editors includes journalism and communication studies students: Cathal McMahon, Kevin Sheeky, Méabh Ní Ghealbháin, Alan Flanagan and Dave McGovern.

Fourth year journalism student and CAMPUS editorial team member, Alan Flanagan, won the award for ‘Colour Writer of the Year’ for his contributions to both CAMPUS and the College View. Articles submitted by Alan included an experience piece on STI testing and his experiences as an Erasmus student in France.

The award for ‘Web Designer of the Year’ was won by third year Multimedia student, Scott Bryan. Some of Scott’s work can be checked out at www.scottbryandesign.com
