5 institutions collaborate to encourage students to attend third level
22 June 2009

Students from schools linked to the Access Services in DCU, DIT, NUIM, TCD and UCD

Over 75 4th and 5th year students from schools linked to the Access Services in DCU, DIT, NUIM, TCD and UCD were acknowledged at the closing ceremony of the Take 5 programme in Blackhall Place on Wednesday June 10th 2009.

The ceremony marked the completion of a week long summer school which saw participants visit the campuses of the 5 participating institutions. This collaborative project endeavours to clarify any misapprehensions about going to 3rd level and to eliminate any fear when making educational choices, particularly in relation to attending 3rd level education.

Participants experience first hand what life is like on each of the different college campuses. They experience taster lectures, workshops and experiments. While in DCU, participants attended lectures from Dr. Giles Warrington on Sport Science, Yvonne O’Connor on Student Sport while Yvonne Mc Loughlin gave a careers workshop based on the theme, 5 days five, colleges, 5 years.

Participants also got to see the social and sporting side to college, by taking part in different activities. While in DCU, participants took part in Pilates, Frisbee, Gaelic Football and Soccer classes which were delivered by DCU Staff.

Another element of the programme was the group project that participants completed over the five days – the project groups for 2009 being photography, music, marketing and drama, the fruits of their labour were showcased at the closing ceremony in Blackhall Place.
