10 years of TG4
Tuesday 5 December 2006

The 10th anniversary of the Irish language television station TG4 was marked by a one-day seminar which took place on Saturday, 25 November 2006 in NUI Galway.
The seminar was opened by Cathal Goan, former director of TG4 and director-general of RTÉ, and the current TG4 deputy director, Pádhraic Ó Ciardha.
Dr Eithne O’Connell of the School of Applied Languages, DCU drew attention to its interdisciplinary aspect. ‘The seminar wanted to encourage and strengthen links between various policy fields: broadcasting and communications, socio-economic development and sociolinguistics and language planning.’
‘The seminar was aimed at a wide range of people,’ explained Dr John Walsh of the School of Irish, NUI Galway, ‘such as independent producers, academics working with Irish, communications, journalism or other fields, public servants, and educationalists in general.’
Although the event was held in Irish, there was a full interpreting service for English-speakers, and those who did not speak Irish were particularly welcomed at the event.
The event, which was organised by DCU in association with NUI Galway, was sponsored by Foras na Gaeilge.
