DCU Workshop aims to cut energy consumption by 25%

12 March 2010

Dublin City University in collaboration with Enterprise Ireland is organising the First Technical Workshop on research being undertaken on Smart Power Management in Home and Health by an industry led European consortium. The workshop will take place at the Enterprise Ireland Head Office , Conference Rooms 1&2, the Plaza, Eastpoint Business Park, Dublin 3 on Thursday 18th March 2010, starting at 9.30am.

The aim of the SmartPM project is to develop the smart power technologies and module platforms that enable intelligent motor drives for efficiently controlled engines in industrial and residential applications, as well as efficient power supplies and power management solutions that will consume up to 25% less energy by 2012.

Worldwide energy consumption will probably double in the next 20 years and with it CO_2 emission. The efficient use of electricity could reduce the predicted energy consumption by 30%.

"The potential for sizeable savings on energy consumption are more likely to come in the short term from more efficient power supply and use," said Professor Patrick McNally, Personal Chair in Electronic Engineering in DCU. "Although a lot of discussion is about alternative power supplies, the simple fact is that better power management is likely to save the consumer, business owner and the government in the short to medium term, and that is what this project is about."

The SmartPM (Smart Power Management in Home and Health, www.smartpm.eu) is a project supported under the Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) of the European Nanoelectronics Initiative Advisory Council (ENIAC).

The workshop will describe the technologies being developed in the SmartPM project by the industry led consortium. The event is aimed at business leaders, R&D leaders, entrepreneurs and researchers in Ireland who wish to understand more about the new technologies and who may want to utilise them at some time in the future.
