Congratulations to DCU Community Team

Congratulations to our students, staff, alumni and friends who took part in the 2011 Flora Women’s Mini Marathon - now the biggest all-women event of its kind in the world.
This year, the DCU Community Team was part of 40,000 women to take action on Dublin streets for many deserving causes throughout the country of Ireland and we are truly honoured that the Team chose to raise vital funds for the DCU Access Scholarship Programme.
Participants at Monday’s event were full of confidence at the start-line, despite the mounting tension, having been well-prepared by DCU Athletics Coach Enda Fitzpatrick, who provided regular training sessions in Albert College Park in the run up to the event. Team members were delighted to see Enda on the day, especially at the 9km mark, cheering them on to the finish line!
Access Officer Ita Tobin said, “On behalf of the DCU Access Service and our students, I would like to extend our thanks to everyone who took part in this years’ Flora Mini-Marathon to raise much needed funds for Access Scholarships. A special thanks to all our friends and colleagues in DCU who gave generously through sponsorship and provided the DCU Community Team with so much encouragement and support along the way. We are looking forward to making this an annual event and encourage all staff, students and Alumni to join the DCU Community Team next year for the 2012 Mini-Marathon.”
CEO of the DCU Educational Trust, Patrick McDermott said, “We in the DCU Educational Trust are very grateful to all those who organised and took part in this year’s Mini Marathon on behalf of the Access Scholarship programme. The DCU Community Team is a great example of members of the DCU family coming together to support this life-changing initiative. Members of the team and their supporters have our sincere thanks and a special pride from knowing that they have made an enormous difference in the lives of these talented young people.”
The Access Programme, which is an important initiative for DCU addresses the financial burden that may deter bright, deserving young people from taking their rightful place at university.
Dublin City University pioneered the Access Programme and it is now the
largest and most successful programme of its kind in Ireland. Its’ significant success over the past 21 years is one of the main reasons why DCU was chosen as the Sunday Times Irish University of the Year 2010.
Students enrolled through the DCU Access Scholarship Programme may come from under-served areas of the country or have experienced socio-economic disadvantage.Â
The overall aims of the Access programme are: to develop positive attitudes to education and help young people to remain at school, to encourage more students to consider third level education as a viable option for them and to support those students who do make it to third level to complete their course of study.
We currently have over 420 students on access scholarships at DCU from all of the 26 counties. Every Access Scholarship is privately funded through the generosity of friends of DCU.
