In the midst of the excitement of the St. Patrick's Week festivities in Washington, DC with the Speaker's Luncheon for the Taoiseach, the White House Reception, the American Ireland Fund National Gala, and the Irish Ambassador's annual hooley at his residence, DCU arrived in town with three of its leading researchers to highlight the Irish contribution to science. Highlighting breakthroughs in the areas of healthcare, security, and alternative energy sources, Professors Brian MacCraith and Alan Smeaton and Dr. Stephen Daniels joined DCU President Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski at a cocktail reception hosted by Washington Law Firm, Nelson Mullins.

Guests at the DCU soiree included members of the US Congress and senior Washington influencers, including the current US Ambassador to Ireland, Tom Foley. Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern TD, was the evening's guest of honour. Despite a packed schedule of events that day, he made plenty of time for his local university, pronouncing it 'one of the best universities in the world' to the welcoming crowd.
