Student scholarship in memory of Seán Moylan, a War of Independence leader
Monday 11 December 2006

Aisling O'Brien, a student of the Masters in Journalism, has been awarded a €3000 scholarship established in memory of Seán Moylan, a War of Independence leader and government minister who died in the 1950s.
Moylan was an IRA commander in the north Cork area in the early 1920s. His memoir of his experience in the War of Independence was not published until this year. He served as Minister for Lands, for Education and for Agriculture in Fianna Fail governments of the 1940s and 1950s.
The Moylan scholarship has been awarded by a Co Cork-based committee since 1962 to a student on a Masters programme.
Aisling, who is from Tralee, Co Kerry, was awarded the scholarship on the basis of a submission that included details of her current studies and future plans, and some examples of published journalistic work.
