Veronica Guerin Memorial Scholarship
Deadline for applications: Noon, Monday, 11 April 2011.
Independent News and Media and DCU School of Communications have announced the 2011 Veronica Guerin Memorial Bursary at Dublin City University. The bursary is awarded in memory of investigative journalist Veronica Guerin, who was murdered on 26 June 1996, and who served as a member of the governing body of NIHE/DCU from 1982 to 1992.
The bursary award scheme was initiated in 2007. Each bursary is for a sum of €8,500 and is intended to meet the cost of fees and some part of the general expenses of a prospective or present student of the MA in Journalism in Dublin City University who wishes to specialize in investigative journalism.
Applicants must propose by the deadline an outline for their final thesis/major project that is on a topic or in a format relevant to the memory of Veronica Guerin. This might be, for example, a series of five investigative articles or an in-depth radio documentary or an academic study of the practice of investigative journalism.
The panel of assessors, including representatives of DCU School of Communications and of
Independent News and Media, will make their selection on the overall quality of applications,
taking into account in particular, (a) the rationale and clarity of the proposal; (b) its proposed
methodology; (c) the research/ investigation plan, including possible sources; (d) academic
and/or professional performance to date; (e) the place of possible publication identified (for
proposals in journalism formats). Applications should be no longer than 2,500 words.
Applicants may refer to earlier journalism or research they have done that is relevant to their proposal. Applications are invited from individuals who have worked in some capacity as journalists and who wish to be registered on the Masters in Journalism programme at DCU in the next academic year, 2011/12. (Requirements for entry to that programme are published at http://www.dcu.ie/communications/index.shtml - go to postgraduate programmes.)
The successful candidate for the scholarship will have a place reserved for them for entry to the Masters in Journalism in autumn 2011. That place will be confirmed if the applicant demonstrates they have the required qualifications and/ or journalism experience and motivation. If the successful applicant has secured scholarship funding from another source, this may be taken into account in determining the final level of the award.
Applications should be delivered to The Secretary, School of Communications, Dublin City University, Glasnevin, DUBLIN 9 (mary.nulty@dcu.ie) by noon on 11 April 2011. The application should include: 1. a curriculum vitae; 2. a statement of motivation and suitability for the scholarship (max. 300 words); 3. an outline of the investigative project to be undertaken as part of the Masters in Journalism studies (max 1000 words)
The John Thompson Marketing & Media Scholarships 2011
Deadline for applications: by 4pm, Tuesday 29 March 2011
Dublin City University and the family and friends of the late John Thompson have
announced the John Thompson Marketing & Media Scholarships for 2011.
Scholarships are available to support Masters students of journalism and of
marketing, and to help prepare them for the changing world of publishing. The
scholarship programme was established in 2008 to honour the memory of the late
John Thompson, former Chief Executive of Associated Newspapers Ireland (Daily
Irish Mail and Mail on Sunday) and Managing Director, The Star.
The first scholarships were awarded to students who are currently taking the Masters http://www.dcu.ie/news/2008/nov/s1108o.shtml).
The scholarships aim to encourage connections between journalism and marketing
by encouraging media and communications graduates to study marketing and
business graduates to study Journalism. The idea for this approach reflects a deeply
held belief of John Thompson’s that the two disciplines are critical and reinforce each
other.
The scholarships will cover fees and some expenses for two students each year to
undertake Masters programmes at Dublin City University. One, a graduate of
Journalism, Media or Communications, will undertake the MBS in Marketing at DCU
Business School. The second scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of Business
studies to undertake the MA in Journalism at DCU School of Communications.
Applications for these Scholarships are open to graduates – including those
expecting to graduate in summer 2011 – of all recognised higher education
institutions in Ireland.
In both cases, the selected applicants will need to meet the academic and other
requirements of entry to the respective Masters programmes in order to qualify for
the scholarship. They will need to demonstrate their interest and ability to combine
skills and understanding in business, especially marketing, and in media.
The scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of a written application and
interview by a panel comprising representatives from the bursary funders, DCU
School of Communications, DCU Business School, plus an independent person from
media marketing or business journalism.
The minimum academic qualification for candidates is an upper-second-class (2.1) honours undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
The bursaries will cover full fees for the respective Masters programmes and some additional expenses for purchases of books and other materials. Completed applications should be returned to mary.nulty@dcu.ie
