Award for 'focal.ie' site

www.focal.ie has been voted the best Irish language website at the inaugural Irish Web Awards.

More than 300 people from the online community attended the award ceremony in Dublin on Saturday, which was sponsored by www.moviestar.ie.

The terminology website, focal.ie recorded almost half a million searches in September. It is one of the largest terminology databases in the world, combining over a quarter of a million Irish and English terms in one accessible site.

Developed by Fiontar, Dublin City University's Irish-medium teaching and research unit, stage one of the work was funded by INTERREG IIIA (2004-7). Fiontar, DCU continues to develop the focal.ie resource on a project basis for Foras na Gaeilge (2008-11).

The website is aimed at students, teachers, journalists, translators and researchers, who need the authoritative Irish form of English terms.
