As part of our expanding Schools Programme the DCU Access Service has introduced two new initiatives for Primary and Secondary students. An Art Competition was introduced for children in 3rd class and an Essay Competition was open to 1st year Secondary students from schools linked to DCU.

The theme for Art entries was “The Future is Bright”. Over 400 children took part and a winner from each school was awarded a book voucher and DCU pack at a celebration evening held at DCU and attended by teachers, parents and pupils. The overall winner of the Art Competition, Taminine Maher from Gaelscoil Bhaile Munna won a digital camera for her picture. Taminine put a lot of thought into her picture. She asked each of her classmates what they wanted to be when they grew up and then drew each of them dressed for the job they would have in the future. Taminine hopes to be a teacher when she grows up.

The celebration event was also attended by Essay competition winners from each secondary school – their theme was “My Life in 2020”. Twelve finalists were chosen from the 130 entrants. The competition was won by Jordan Kennedy from The Donahies Community School, Dublin 13 for his exciting futuristic adventure story. Jordan won a fantastic lap top donated by IBM which will be invaluable to Jordan in developing his writing talent and ICT skills not to mention supporting his school work.

Winning entries are now on Display in the Ground Floor of the Nursing Building.
