New Courses at DCU

DCU has introduced a number of new degree courses for the next academic year starting in September. These courses are an attractive addition to the university’s already substantial range of degrees and postgraduate courses in health, science, business and the humanities.

The new courses are:

  • BSc in Physical Education
  • BSc in Marketing, Innovation and Technology
  • BSc in Children's and General (Integrated) Nursing
  • BSc in Quantitative Finance
  • MBS in Human Resource Management
  • Professional Doctoral Programme
  • Executive Masters in Entrepreneurship
  • European MSc in Business Informatics
  • M.Sc. in Biomedical Diagnostics

The new BSc in Physical Education involves three strands: Physical Education, Biology and Education Studies. It offers prospective students –for the first time in Ireland – an opportunity to train as a PE teacher in the east coast region of Ireland. The proposed combination of teaching PE with Biology, a subject that is fundamental to the core knowledge and understanding of the body and how it works, is also a new development in this area. For prospective teachers, Physical Education is a wonderful subject to teach. It involves educating, motivating and sharing with children and youth the experiences of being physically active, including activities such as learning how to swim, to play games, to dance and to do gymnastics. This degree programme aims to produce highly qualified, motivated and enthusiastic teachers ready to contribute to the development of physical education in Ireland.

The new BSc in Marketing, Innovation and Technology is an interdisciplinary Marketing degree offered by DCU Business School in conjunction with the Faculty of Engineering and Computing and the Faculty of Science and Health and is the first of its kind in Ireland. The B.Sc. in Marketing, Innovation and Technology offers a unique combination of business and marketing with innovation and technology in terms of modules such as new product development, industrial design, web communications and biotechnology and prepares students to succeed as marketing specialists in the fast growing medium to high technology sectors.

The B.Sc. (Hons) Children’s and General (Integrated) Nursing programme offers an exciting new development within nursing. You can now receive two nursing qualifications in 4.5 years in both Children’s and General nursing. This programme is underpinned by the view that both the child and adult are unique individuals who have the right to be cared for by knowledgeable, reflective and skilled nurses within a variety of health care settings. This course is available to mature students on the basis of a written assessment and an interview.

The BSc in Quantitative Finance is a new programme for students with strong mathematical ability who want to apply those skills to challenging positions in the financial services industry. It prepares students for employment in financial services and banking. The programme combines the techniques and approaches from mathematics, statistics and computing relevant to the study of finance.

The MBS in Human Resource Management is one-year full-time taught programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in the fast changing world of human resource management. The innovative and distinguishing features of this Masters programme include its focus on international elements of management, an emphasis on enhancing leadership capability, and the importance given to building professional competencies through skills workshops. The programme is open to eligible graduates from any discipline.

The Professional Doctoral Programme is an exciting new opportunity for professionals currently in senior management roles seeking to develop their career and contribute to knowledge of management practice through research. This programme combines scholarly academic theory-building with professional practice at the highest level. There is a specific focus on the generation and development of novel applied knowledge whereby participants demonstrate and hone their skills through their individual action research project. Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of Doctor of Business.

The Ryan Academy and DCU Business School are delighted to announce their first joint programme, an Executive Masters in Entrepreneurship, which will commence in October 2006. This is a part-time programme run over two years at the Ryan Academy in Citywest. It will interest entrepreneurs and potential or aspiring entrepreneurs from all sectors of business activity. It will also be of interest to managers, involved in the support of entrepreneurs and new ventures, employed in development agencies, enterprise boards or the financial sector.

The School of Computing is to launch a new European M.Sc. in Business Informatics in September 2006. This innovative programme will equip graduates of computer science or comparable disciplines with an in-depth understanding of the business applications of information and communications technology (ICT), and how it interacts with business strategy, both within an Irish and a European context.

>> The Biomedical Diagnostics Institute at DCU has developed a new taught M.Sc. in Biomedical Diagnostics. This is the study of procedures that provide information which aids the screening, detection, diagnosis and monitoring of disease. The course will include modules underpinning the science and technology of biomedical diagnostics such as Advances in Diagnostic Technology, Nanobiotechnology and Genetics. There will also be a number of workshops with a biomedical focus in the following areas: Ethics, Science Communication, Legislation & Regulation, IP & Commercialisation. Students will also undertake an intensive practical course and research project with input from industry. Graduates of this programme will be high quality, highly skilled, adaptable researchers and will have gained important perspectives by being exposed to both academic and industrial research attitudes. Their entry to the workforce will address the perceived deficit of highly trained employees in the medical device and diagnostics industry.
