SANTA DASH: in aid of FR Peter Mc Verry Trust and the Arusha Appeal

Santa Dash

Over 50 DCU football players and athletes took part in a charity santa dash around DCU campus this week.

Organised by the DCU Sports Academy, the Santa Dash was a 1500m loop around the campus led by European Cross Country Champion Fionnuala Britton and Olympic Marathon qualifier Linda Byrne, both of whom are DCU graduates.

The two charities who will benefit from the run are the Fr. Peter Mc Verry Trust, a Dublin based charity that provides shelter for the homeless and rehabilitation programmes for drug addicts, and the Arusha Appeal, which provides education support for school children in Tanzania.

Brendan Gillen from DCU Finance said:
"As part of a local volunteer and education support programme both my wife Theresa and I are travelling to Arusha in Northern Tanzania for 4 weeks starting 14 December. The objectives of the programme are to work with local schools, kinder gardens and orphanages to help teach children English, Maths and coaching in Sports Education. This will take place in the township of Esso on the outskirts of Arusha a town in Northern Tanzania which is home to 70,000 people who live in very basic conditions and have been hugely impacted by HIV/AIDS.The area consists mostly of unplanned, high-density, low-income dwellings. Poverty, lack of services and infrastructure are major issues for the community. HIV/AIDS has also reduced the level of support given by families and the community".

All monies collected will be split evenly between thr Fr Peter Mc Verry Trust and the rusha Appeal
