DCU Ladies Gaelic Footballers retained their O’Connor Cup title on Sunday 21 March in a thrilling final against University of Ulster Jordanstown.  Both teams had comfortable victories in their semi finals against UCD and UL respectively and the final proved to be a spectacle of top class football for the large support gathered at the St Claire’s Grounds in DCU.

Both squads paraded an embarrassing talent of inter county players and the match was always in the balance with the scores tied on no less than seven occasions throughout.  DCU edged ahead just before half time with a superbly taken goal by dynamic forward Ciara McAnespie.  Led by team captain Shannon Quinn and midfield star Fiona McHale, DCU began to exert some dominance in the second half but could never extend their lead beyond 2 points.  UUJ drew level and with only seconds of normal time remaining, they converted a free kick to lead by the minimum margin.  However, the reigning champions responded superbly and scored 1-3 in injury time to secure an emphatic victory.

Congratulations to the players and team officials on a fantastic achievement.  Special mention must also go to the Organising Committee who co-ordinated a very successful weekend of sport for 22 teams in total.
