2007 International Biology Olympiad (IBO)

Professor Richard O Kennedy, James Wu and Susan Townsend (IBO)

James Wu, Methodist College, Belfast, Co Antrim was awarded a bronze medal at the 18 th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2007) in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan , Canada in July. James will also receive a €750 IBM University scholarship. The Irish IBO 2007 team included Thomas McGrath-Daly, Castlecomer Community School , Kilkenny; James Wu, Methodist College, Belfast, Co Antrim; Ciarán Downey, St Columb's College, Derry, Co Derry and Naomi Hodgins, Kings Hospital College , Palmerstown, Dublin . This team was selected from the medal winners at the IBM/DCU Biology Olympiad held in DCU in January. They were given additional training and assignments, devised by Professor Richard O Kennedy and Susan Townsend before the team of four was finally selected in May . They also attended an intensive residential training programme in the School of Biotechnology prior to their departure to Canada . Since 1998 Irish students have won 14 bronze IBO medals. Susan Townsend will complete her PhD next year.
