DCU’s MSc Biomedical Diagnostics wins GradIreland Science Postgraduate Course of the Year 2011.

At the Gradireland Recruitment and Postgraduate Awards Gala Dinner in the Mansion House on Wednesday 13 April, DCU’s MSc in Biomedical Diagnostics won the award for the Science Postgraduate Course of the Year 2011. Judged by an independent panel of education & industry experts, the citation for the M.Sc. award noted “This programme is meeting the needs of the medical device industry in Ireland, which is a growing sector. Its blended learning approach, excellent links with industry and the employability of graduating students just give this course the edge”.
The MSc in Biomedical Diagnostics is a unique graduate training course, merging academic modules with industry insight and analysis. It is hosted by the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute (BDI), Dublin City University (DCU), a CSET research institute funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The MSc, established in September 2006, is multi-disciplinary in nature and is focused on the science and technology underpinning the development of next generation biosensors for use in biomedical diagnostics. It was established to meet the future skills needs of the Irish Medical Devices and the broader Life Science sector.
The judging panel deemed the MSc Biomedical Diagnostics to be an exceptional postgraduate offering, with employability being the key criterion. The first employment destination of MSc Biomedical Diagnostics graduates is impressive with many graduates employed in the Irish Life Science industry and others diversified into areas such as regulatory affairs and medical laboratory science. A number of graduates are pursuing PhD studies within BDI/DCU or worldwide.
Course reputation, innovation and relationship with industry also played a key role in selecting the MSc for the award. The MSc has a number of unique features which enhance the student experience including; input from world- leading scientists and clinicians, frequent industry interaction through the BDI partnership, a 3 month practical research project in cutting edge research facilities and a focus on student professional development in areas such as entrepreneurship, intellectual property, and science communication.
