DCU saddened by the death of Dr David Hammond

The university was extremely saddened to hear of the death yesterday of Dr David Hammond.
Dr Hammond received an Honorary Doctorate from DCU in November 2003 in recognition of the vital role his creativity and artistic imagination played in the building of the Ireland of today.
He was a free and original spirit, who channelled his artistic energy into film and film-making, music, literature and, in his later years, painting.
The citation, which was written and read at the 2003 conferring ceremony by Professor John Horgan, said, “The decision to confer the honorary degree on David Hammond is a timely recognition not only of his selfless, dedicated and skilful work over many decades, but of his unique status on this island, and his reputation as an ambassador for us all outside it. It also underscores the importance of cultural life, activity and traditions in the creation of a new Ireland”.
Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, speaking on behalf of the Chancellor, Governing Authority, staff and students of DCU said that the whole community was saddened by his passing. “Dr Hammond’s contribution to the culture of Irish life is immeasurable. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family, especially his wife and children, at this very sad time”.
