DCU is sending a team of 12 student athletes to the World Student Games to be held in Belgrade from the 1-12 July 2009. A total of 69 students have been selected from Irish colleges and universities for the biennial competition representing athletics, fencing, football (men’s and women’s), swimming, taekwondo and tennis.

Enda Fitzpatrick, Director of the Athletics Academy said “It is a great honour for DCU to have such a large number of students competing in athletics events at the 2009 World Student Games. The increase in DCU athletes qualifying for this event can be attributed directly to the Sports Academy and growth and success of the athletics programme in DCU.”

The World Student Games is an international multi-sport event for University athletes. The first official World Student Games were organised in 1924 and the event has been held every 2 years since then. DCU supports athletes competing in this event and has a proud tradition of representation at these games in recent years.

Olympian Fionnuala Britton, one of the DCU team, has also been on top form in international university competition picking up an individual silver and team bronze in the cross-country at last year’s World University Championships in Mauquenchy, France.

Yvonne O'Connor, Sport & Recreation Officer saidQualifying for the World Student Games is a fantastic achievement for a student athlete as it is the pinnacle of University Sports competition. DCU has supported these athletes as Sport Scholarship recipients and we are now extremely proud to be supporting them as they compete at the 2009 World Student Games in Belgrade. We would like to congratulate all 12 athletes for their achievements to date and wish them every success in Belgrade.”
