Points for DCU business degrees increase despite overall sectoral decline

Applications to study business at Dublin City University have increased despite a marked decline elsewhere, latest CAO figures show.
The most popular business course is European Business (Transatlantic Studies) which is jointly run with Northeastern University Boston, te leading US university offering work placements and which offers graduates two degrees: BSc International Management (North Eastern University, Boston) and a BA in European Business from DCU.
The course, which has been running for over ten years, also has the added benefit of being able to offer the students two work placements, one in Ireland and the second in North America.
John Connolly, chair of the programme at DCU said: "The BA in European Business, transatlantic studies continues to grow in popularity. Part of its appeal is that students can complete two degrees from two universities, experience two work placements in two different countries, and experience a multicultural environment from day one, all in just four years. Our students have the opportunity to attend Northeastern University in Boston a highly prestigious institution, which has been ranked number one among those US universities which offer work placements, so we are delighted to partner with them. Our graduates are working across the world, in companies like Adidas, BMW, Bord Bia, Vodafone, and Goldman Sachs".
Other DCU business degrees which continue to prove popular are those combining business and languages in particular European Business with French and European Business with Spanish.
Commenting, President of DCU, Prof Brian MacCraith said: "The importance of work placements, whether these are in Ireland or overseas, has never been more obvious in dictating the growth and popularity of degree programmes. I have no doubt that the reason we have bucked the national trend for business degrees has been because we offer work placements as an integral part of all these programmes. They are essential - not only because they give the student first hand work experience relating to their degrees but they also introduce them to the world of enterprise and industry, early in their education, which helps develop them into rounded, adaptable individuals who are ready to hit the ground running after they graduate."
Points for the majority of all DCU programmes have risen this year with significant increases in Digital Media Engineering (+80), Analytical Science (+ 45), Biotechnology (+55) Psychology (+ 20), Computer Applications (+15), Multimedia (+15)
