DCU Physics graduate wins award for International Society of Automation

08 December 2010

Nichola being presented with the Fryar Medal by Dr Enda McGlynn at the November graduation

Nichola Walsh, graduate of DCU's Applied Physics degree programme, has won this year's International Society of Automation (ISA) Ireland award.

The award comprises a medallion and the Ger Dulea bursary of €750 which is to be used to assist the recipient in their postgraduate studies.

The award is based on Nichola's excellent overall performance in her degree and especially for her outstanding 4th year project entitled “Psychoacoustic Delay Generator ”, which is an excellent example of the application of physics to an important problem in a domain not normally regarded as “core physics”, demonstrating the breadth of skills and potential contribution of applied physics graduates. Nichola had to utilize her basic physics knowledge and abilities while learning how to deal with the necessities of a new application area and she dealt with all these issues with great professionalism. This project was proposed and supervised by Dr. Kevin McGuigan from the Department of Physiology & Medical Physics in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Nicholas was based in DCU for the execution of the work. Nichola was also the recipient of the Fryar Medal which is awarded by the School of Physical Sciences for the best student project in the 2010 graduating class.

The award will be presented at a ceremony in UCC on 13th December next and Dr. McGuigan and Dr. Enda McGlynn (4th year physics project coordinator in DCU) will be in attendance along with Nichola.
