Self, Selves and Sexualities International Conference
18 March 2010

This international conference, co-organised by Mel Duffy, School of Nursing, and Jean-Philippe Imbert , School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies, is the first Irish conference in Sexuality Studies to be held in the Republic of Ireland. It will take place in the Nursing Building on Friday March 19 and Saturday March 20,
Sexuality Studies is an existing and established discipline in most academic cultures, which is reflected by the fact that the 60 speakers and 15 poster presenters come from the five continents.
There are three strands to the Conference: comparative literature and arts, health studies as well as interculturalism and social sciences, which reflect the inter-disciplinarity of Dublin City University.
The conference will add to current debates on issues pertaining to all sexualities (heterosexual, bisexual, transgender, lesbian and gay) both on an academic and non-academic basis.
The evolution of the discourses of sexuality in Irish society has nurtured a specific type of presence in today’s Ireland, as will be reflected by the plenary addresses of Pr Diarmaid Ferriter and Ms Mary Raftery. Ireland is undergoing many societal shifts which are reflected in current debates regarding sexuality, such as the power of the Church, sexuality across the life span and gender issues, which some of the delegates will address.
