ExWell Medical, a new multidisciplinary exercise and sports medicine clinic based at Dublin City University, was launched on Monday 20 June in Croke Park. The event was attended by Malcolm O'Kelly, Irish hook, who returned this week from the Lions Tour of New Zealand due to injury.

ExWell Medical will bring together in one centre a range of specialists with different important roles in prescribing and monitoring the use of regular exercise for health benefits and also in optimising individual and team performance in competitive sport. These specialists include exercise physiologists, sports biomechanists, sports and health psychologists, sports nutritionists, chartered physiotherapists and physicians.

The service will draw on the expertise and research currently being carried out at Dublin City University in the School of Health and Human Performance. Its academic staff have published much-acclaimed research, which is recognised nationally and internationally, into the effects of inactivity in the young and the importance of lifestyle on physical and psychological well-being.

In addition to supporting athletes of all standards, ExWell Medcial hopes, through specific multidisciplinary programmes, to make a significant contribution to a number of pressing and related health problems in modern Ireland, especially obesity, cardiovascular disease and sedentary lifestyles.

Dr Noel McCaffrey, DCU lecturer and director of ExWell, spoke of the importance of the DCU link. "Being associated with DCU means that we can avail of not only the very latest health and fitness research, but also the most up-to-date equipment in the University Sports Club and in the laboratories based in the School of Health and Human Performance"

Pat Falvey, well known Irish expeditioner, is a client of ExWell Medical. "My work takes me to the remotest and most challenging parts of the world and the preparation includes aspects of psychology, fitness, nutrition and medicine, all of which are now available through ExWell Medical at DCU."
