On Wednesday 4 May, the Dublin regional final of the K'NEX Challenge 2005 took place in conjunction with the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering on DCU campus. The K'NEX Challenge is part of the STEPS scheme, run by the Institute of Engineers of Ireland, to encourage imagination, creativity and ingenuity in pupils through engineering and design.

Over 7500 pupils from all over the country took part in the challenge which involved building a model, using the kits supplied by STEPS, to solve an engineering problem. In the Dublin regional final the teams had to build part of a space station that could hold a specified each team used their imagination and came up with different construction.

First place went to Anthony Smith and Paul Lowther, from Finglas NS and second place went o Niall Redmond and Daire Wade, from Dublin 7 Educate Together. The national final will take place in the Helix on 15 June with 24 teams competing for the national title.
