DCU’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Science Research Day 2010 took place on Wednesday the 26th of May in the School of Nursing, DCU. The focus of this year’s Research Day was the Social and Economic Impact of Humanities and Social Science Research.

In her keynote address to the assembly entitled ‘IMPACT – the new imperative (or just a dirty word?)’, Dipti Pandya, Director of the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences said “Where all public funding is under pressure, there is an understandable demand from the public to see the impact of research investments on society and on their own lives”.

From the subsequent poster session displaying DCU’s research and a round-table debate on the issue of Humanities and Social Science research it was clear that the research taking place in DCU has a real impact on society and is grounded on tangible research outputs.

In her closing remarks, Prof. Eithne Guilfoyle, Executive Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, said “the strength of DCU’s Humanities and Social Science research lies in its real-world focus. The clear value of our research at DCU is that it has a different focus than the more tradition fields of research at other Irish universities.”
