A new research project to create an index of Media Ownership in Ireland has commenced at DCU. The Media Ownership Monitor (MOM) project is being undertaken by Dublin City University’s Centre for Society, Information and Media in partnership with Montague Communications. The first edition of MOM will be published in Autumn 2005.

The MOM Index, which will be published every six months, will look at various issues pertaining to media ownership in Ireland. The first edition will benchmark the ownership of national and local newspapers, as well as national and local broadcast media. It is intended that future editions will examine changing ownership trends, how media ownership in Ireland compares to other countries and ownership patterns in periodicals and new media.

Project co-ordinator Roddy Flynn and Project Researcher Gary Quinn are both attached to the Centre for Society Information and Media (SIM), a communications research centre, investigating socio-economic, historical, professional and cultural aspects of print, audiovisual and digital media. SIM builds on, and expands, the work on digital media and new media industries, that was the focus of the Centre for Society Technology and Media (STeM, 2000-2005). It also conducts research in broader areas of media policy and practice.

Project Sponsor, Pat Montague is founder and Managing Director of Montague Communications, the leading Irish public relations agency concerned primarily with raising the public profile and giving voice to organisations and groups working for progressive social change in our society.
