Great Craic & Impressive Golf at the PGA National Ireland at Palmerstown House
8th Annual Alumni Golf Classic
Friday, 23 September 2005

The PGA National Ireland at Palmerstown House Golf Club in Co. Kildare hosted the 8th Annual DCU Alumni Golf Classic on Friday, September 2nd. The 7419-yard parkland course on the impressive 500-acre stud farm setting offered a stiff golfing test in glorious sunshine. In total 29 teams representing 116 alumni and friends from DCU took on the challenge of one of Europe’s future great golf courses.
In the end it was DCU Sports Science & Health Graduate ‘04 Daragh Sheridan’s team who conquered this testing parkland course with a tidy score of 89 points. In second place with 88 points were Matt Forde, Sean O Hanrahan, John Colleton, and Donal Gallagher. In third place with a score of 87 points were Shane Derby, Peter Downey, Tony James and Eamon Moore. The Trispace fourth prize went to Ronan Killeen, Michael Doyle, Len Mongey, and Mark Kearney who also had 87 points but were narrowly defeated on the back nine.
Additional prizes, kindly sponsored by Jason Clarke Photography, for longest drive (male and female) went to John Kirwan and Carol Ann Casey respectively. Hugh Quigley won nearest the pin on the 8th with a fine shot left less than a 1.5 metres from the hole.
Aprés golf, all the participants enjoyed a well-deserved meal and an opportunity for classmates to catch up with one another. The theme of the day was relaxed but dignified competitiveness, laced with loads of craic and good humour.
Speakers on the night included Cathy Holahan who represents the DCU Alumni Council on the DCU Strategic planning group and DCU President, Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski. Cathy talked about the current developments of the Alumni Council and she urged graduates to participate and contribute to alumni activities whenever possible.
It was great to see so many regular faces as well as new faces and the increase in female participation at this year’s event. Let’s hope next year we can continue the development of the event and look forward to welcoming old and new to the 9th annual golf classic.
