DCU’s Dr Bert Ellingboe from the National Centre for Plasma Science & Technology has been presented with a commercialisation award from Enterprise Ireland. It is in recognition of his involvement in a start-up company from DCU called Phive. Phive is responsible for producing plasma equipment, a purpose tool used in a whole host of industries. A plasma source can be used in Semiconductor Manufacture, Solar Cell manufacture, LCD Display manufacture, Surface Treatment of plastics, metal coatings, sterilisation of medical devices etc. For example it forms a coating on solar panels that controls heat and light from the sun. Ellingboe is responsible for creating this plasma source. The company was set up in 2006 with Bernard Hensey, DCU as CEO to exploit the technology. They have elicited significant interest from the main manufacturing capital equipment suppliers of Plasma Sources.
