DCU School of Communications is offering two scholarships for students on its Masters in Journalism. One is for a student aiming to specialise in investigative journalism, and the other for a student with a background in business studies. DCU Business School is offering a related scholarship for a student of the MBS in Marketing.

The Veronica Guerin Memorial Bursary is funded by Independent News and Media in memory of the late Sunday Independent journalist, Veronica Guerin, who was murdered in 1996. The bursary covers the cost of fees and some expenses of a prospective or present student of the MA in Journalism. Applicants must propose an outline for their final thesis or project that is relevant to the memory of Veronica Guerin. This could be a series of investigative articles or an academic study of investigative journalism.

The John Thompson Marketing and Media Scholarships were established this year in memory of John Thompson, who served as chief executive of Associated Newspapers Ireland (Daily Irish Mail and Mail on Sunday) and managing director The Star. These scholarships aim to promote connections between journalism and marketing. One will be awarded to a graduate of business studies to undertake the MA in Journalism at DCU School of Communications, and the other will go to a graduate of journalism, communications or media to undertake the MBS in Marketing at DCU Business School. The scholarships covers fees and some expenses.

For both the Guerin and Thompson scholarships, the selected applicants will need to meet the academic requirements for entry to the DCU Masters programmes in order to receive the awards.

Further details and application forms are available for both scholarship schemes from the secretary of the School of Communications, at mary.nulty@dcu.ie. The closing date for applications for the John Thompson scholarships is 14 April, and for the Veronica Guerin bursary 28 April.
