It is with great sadness that DCU has learned of the passing away of Dr Tim Mahony of the Killeen Group. Dr Mahony received an Honorary Doctorate from DCU in 1994 in recognition of his exemplary achievements, not just in the world of business but in other dimensions of his life. Professor Anthony Clare described Dr Mahony as an excellent role model for his ability to balance his professional and private life. He was committed to the Arts, and encouraged young people to develop a love of music, theatre and opera.

This commitment culminated in the opening of the Helix at DCU in 2002, the main auditorium of which, The Mahony Hall, was named after Dr Mahony in recognition of his generous support of the venture. At the official opening of the Helix, Dr Mahony said, “It has been a privilege for us in Toyota Ireland to be involved with the development of this magnificient edifice which will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the future of the performing arts in this country. It is a space which engages and enchants and is a striking testimony to the foresight and commitment of the visionaries here at DCU”.

On learning of the death of Dr Mahony, Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, President of DCU, said that the university had lost a friend, supporter and benefactor. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr Mahony, but feel enormously privileged to have developed such a long and lasting friendship with him over the years. We regret his passing and extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends”.
