Students who are taking the Leaving Certificate in June 2005 should note that DCU has just introduced a new four-year degree programme, the BSc in Athletic Therapy and Training (DC204). Details of the programme and how to apply are posted on the CAO website.

This programme will be of interest to those who are interested in the treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, particularly in relation to sport- and exercise-based injuries.

Musculoskeletal injuries are common in sport and physical activity and the aim of the Athletic Therapist and Trainer (ATT) is firstly to help prevent these injuries through appropriate physical training. If an injury does occur their role is to diagnose, treat and then rehabilitate the patient. Since patients will, in the main, be involved in sport and other high levels of physical activity, the ATT will help to recondition them so that they can safely return to their pre-injury level of fitness and performance.

Under supervision, students will gain clinical experience during years two and three. In the first half of the final year, students will gain 4-6 months clinical experience either in Ireland or in a university in the United States.

Entry requirements
OC3 or HD3 in a laboratory science subject and in Mathematics, in addition to the university's minimum entry requirements as outlined in the prospectus.
