Leading figure in Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Dr Nabeel Shaath, to reflect on experiences at seminar at DCU

A leading figure in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will be reflecting on his experiences at a seminar in DCU. Dr Nabeel Shaath, Fatah's Commissioner of International Relations, will address dignitaries and academics at DCU on the campaign for UN recognition of a Palestinian State based on the 1967 borders.

Dr. Shaath headed the first PLO delegation to the UN and accompanied President Yasser Arafat during his famous 1974 speech at the UN General Assembly. Between 1992 and 1995, Dr. Shaath was the PLO's Chief Negotiator with Israel, before being appointed to Palestinian Authority ministerial roles in Foreign Affairs, Planning and International Co-operation. Between 2005 to 2006, he was also Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Prime Minister.

Dr. Shaath was a member of the Palestinian delegation to the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference and participated in negotiations with Israel at Wye River, Camp David, Taba, Annapolis, Oslo and Washington. He has represented Palestine in many world conferences including the World Economic Forum.

Prior to commencing a fulltime career in politics in 1969, Dr. Shaath taught Finance and Economics at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States from 1961-1965 and later taught at the Universities of Cairo, Alexandria and Beirut.

The seminar is being hosted jointly by the Schools of Communication and Law and Government at DCU and will be chaired by Dr John Doyle Head of the School of Law and Government. The event will take place at 2.30 p.m Tuesday, 12th July, 2011 in the School of Nursing (Health Sciences Building), Room HG 17.
