Matthew Skelton, from the U.S. Copyright Office, talks about intellectual property rights

Matthew Skelton, Attorney-Advisor at the U.S. Copyright Office in the Office of Policy and International Affairs, gave a talk in Dublin City University on 4 October 2006 entitled “The protection of intellectual property rights in a globalised world ”. The Copyright office advises Congress and Us Government agencies on both domestic and international copyright law and policy issues.

Matthew discussed the nature of intellectual property rights, national and international copyright law and enforcement and the challenged posed by today’s technology, which include DVD distribution, film production and the internet in a global market.

MA students from the School of Law and Government attended the lecture - MA in International Relations, MA in Globalisation, and MA in International Security and Conflict Studies. Dr Adam McAuley, who specialises in Child Law, Medical Law, International Human Rights Law and Company Law, thanked Matthew Skelton for an engaging lecture which created great student interest during a robust and engaging questions and answers session. These guest lectures are part of the aforementioned MA programmes and have been given by Government Minister, diplomats, academics, and, representatives of international organisations and non-government organisations.

Matthew Skelton is on a short visit to Ireland from the US facilitated by the US Embassy.
