FORMER AG, EU COMMISSIONER DAVID BYRNE APPOINTED CHANCELLOR OF DCU

The former Attorney General and EU Commissioner David Byrne has been appointed Chancellor of Dublin City University Governing Authority.

David Byrne served as Attorney General from 1997 to 1999 in the first Fianna Fail- Progressive Democrats Coalition Government led by Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern. He was appointed Ireland’s EU Commissioner, with the Health and Consumer Protection portfolio, in September 1999, and he served in that position until 2004.

Called to the bar in 1970, he became a Senior Counsel in 1985. He practised in both the Irish Courts and the European Courts of Justice and also served as a member of the International Court of Commercial Arbitration from 1990-97.

David Byrne is a graduate of UCD with a BA in Economics, Ethics and Politics. He studied law at King’s Inns. During his student days he was a founder of FLAC, the student- run Free Legal Aid Centres providing legal aid to citizens.

The President of DCU, Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski said :“I am very pleased that a person of such a distinguished background in law, government, Europe and business is taking on this important role in DCU.”

David Bryne is also on the board of a number of companies as a non-executive director, including Irish Life and Permanent, and Kingspan
