DCU Grad reaches the top

Gerard McDonnell, an Electronic Engineering Graduate from 1993, reached the 8848 metre summit of Everest on Thursday 22 May 2003 along with follow climber Mick Murphy. Gerard is part of the 2003 Irish Expedition who have conquered the summit in the 50th anniversary year of Sir Edmund Hillary's first conquest of Everest.

In another first, having conquered the world's tallest mountain and planted their Tricolour, the climbers performed an "Everest poc fada" from the peak with a hurley brought on the climb.

The mountain descent will take Gerard and Mick a few days and a week-long party will take place on their return before they return home to the joy of family and friends in Limerick.
