NIHE Engineers visit 21st Century DCU
BEng in Electronic Engineering, Class of 1984 Reunion
11 May 2004

It's 20 years since the first electronic engineering class graduated from NIHE and to mark the occasion, the School of Electronic Engineering in conjunction with DCU Alumni held a 20-year reunion for the class of 1984 on Friday 7 May.
The event started with a reception and tour of campus. Graduates were clearly delighted with modern developments on the University campus particularly the Research & Engineering Building, now home to the School of Electronic Engineering.
Dinner took place in the refurbished Albert College building - formerly home to the EE graduates during their NIHE days. Among the speeches at dinner was Jim Dowling, Head of the School of Electronic Engineering who reminded his former students what they used to get up to in those early labs!
Stories emerged about the first students to NIHE, from classmate Dave Coates installing the first ever computer for the college to the memories of the first disco held on campus. And there was great nostalgia at the screening of footage obtained from RTE about the opening of NIHE in 1980 (which was to became Dublin City University in 1989).
For many it was the first time they returned to campus. "It was great to catch up with everyone and to realise that although DCU looks very different, the people are pretty much the same," said graduate Tom O'Faolain. It was a very enjoyable evening with graduates, current and former staff catching up with each other and some networking taking place as well.
Special thanks to Gearoid Mooney, class reunion volunteer who located many of the electronic engineering class and helped to organise the reunion.
