2004 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO)

The 2004 IPhO was held in Pohang, Korea from the 15th - 23rd July. The Irish team was selected and trained by Dr. Eilish McLoughlin, Mr. David Rea (a physics teacher from Cork who has been involved with the Irish teams since 1998) and the staff of the School of Physical Sciences. A panel of fourteen medal winners at the ISO-Physics in December were given additional training and assignments before the team of five was finally selected in May. These five students received a ten-day intensive residential training programme on the IPhO syllabus in DCU prior to their departure for Korea. Michael Magee was awarded a Bronze IPhO medals and Robert Clancy was awarded a Honourable Mention Certificate. This brings to four the number of International Physics Medals and to four the number of Certificates of Honourable Mention awarded to Irish students since Ireland first participated in the IPhO in 1998.
