Vision/DCU New Business Ideas Awards Ceremony

Vision/DCU New Business Ideas Awards Ceremony took place today, Wednesday 24 April 2002. Lawrence Vesey, senior manager at 'Vision', who launched the New Business Ideas Competition on 26 February 2002, returned to DCU to present the awards to the winning teams.

The competition was judged by Tony Foley from DCUBS, Jerry Macken from Dublin City Enterprise Board and also by Julian Richie, representative of Vision. The proposals are for a real business opportunity and as such should be pragmatic and committed in their approach.

The panel of judges interviewed each team shortlisted, from the interview the judges particularly wanted to see the quality of team spirit and co-operation.

The company that won first place where called VoTran. Their proposal was to supply methods and tools to the construction industry, that where both cost effective and time efficient. The team comprised Cian Ó'Cuinneagáin, Padhraig Ó h-Íarnáin and Shane.

There was a shared second prize. vVenue's proposal was for an innovative new product that would focus on the ticketing systems of organisations; particularly those involved in the entertainment industry. vVenue's team members were Colm Troy, Ivan Heneghan, Declan Boylan, Frank Marshall and Domininque Carr.

The second joint winner was Kin2Elec Technologies. The proposal they put forward was for the K-Converter. This was a kinetic energy battery specifically for mobile phones that would charge through movement. Conor Sugrue, Date Whyte, Ciaran Brassil and Carole Matthews were the team members involved in this venture.

Third prize was given to Túisce for their PractiPac proposal, a collapsible lunch box that also doubles up as a tray. Although primarily aimed at the school-going market, the intention would be to also target the out-door activity groups. The team members here were Siobhan Ní Ríogáin, Maebh Ní Fhallúinn and Róisín Ní Bhaoil.
