On Thursday, November 7th, Professor B. Giesen from the University of Konstanz will open a new lecture series named CrossCurrents in German Studies here at DCU, SALIS. Prof. Giesen, known to DCU from a public lecture during the Cultural Trauma and National Identity conference in 2000, which had an extremely positive resonance both among students and staff, is an eminent German sociologist, whose work comprises, among other things, the sociology of collective identity and in particular the sociological analysis of the history of German national identity formation.

The topic he will speak on during this symposium is “Identities under Construction”, his lecture being entitled: Between Descent and Destiny – Roads to European Identity.

Professor Giesen’s visit will be complemented by a high profile panel discussion on Ireland and Europe – Competing Identities? as well as a colloquium with the title In defence of the concept of collective identity on Friday, November 8th. The colloquium will involve senior academic colleagues as well as students from all the universities in the Dublin area.

All are welcome!
